Review comment:
I actually forgot about the validation of supported types when I wrote
that, and I agree with you that that is worth keeping since it applies
universally to all implementations. My comment was more directed at the
precision validation and the separate API methods introduced for that where I
think they don't enough benefit to warrant their own APIs.
