Dmitry Bravikov commented on FLINK-27963:
-----------------------------------------

Could we please raise the priority of this issue from “Not a Priority” to
“Major” and revive the discussion?

We encountered this problem in production with Flink 2.1.0 and
flink-connector-kafka 4.0.1-2.0.

In one production incident, a message exceeded the default Kafka producer
limit. KafkaSink reported an asynchronous RecordTooLargeException. After
recovery, Flink tried to send the same message again. This created a
fail-restart-fail loop and blocked the processing of unrelated messages.

This is not only a configuration problem. Producer, topic, and broker limits
can be changed independently after the application is deployed. Keeping these
settings synchronized with an application-side validation is fragile. Some
terminal producer errors can also occur only after send.

As a result, one unexpected or deliberately crafted message can stop the whole
pipeline. This creates an application-level denial-of-service risk.

We selected Flink to simplify distributed stream processing and reduce
development time. However, the current API leaves us with two options:

1. Let one final producer error restart the whole job indefinitely.
2. Implement or fork KafkaSink and maintain producer lifecycle, asynchronous
callbacks, checkpoint and flush behavior, metrics, retries, and compatibility
with future connector versions.

Writing our own KafkaSink for this error policy removes much of the benefit of
using Flink.

An opt-in error handler in the Sink API would solve this. The default behavior
should remain FAIL. A configured handler could receive the failed record and
final exception, then choose FAIL, DROP, or SIDE OUTPUT. It should run after
normal connector retries and expose an error metric. Delivery guarantees should
clearly exclude records intentionally dropped by the handler.
