   @bschuchardt in order to test this PR, I had to add a dependency on 
log4j-core (in order to see the new tid logging). While I was in there 
(`build.gradle`) I eliminated some superfluous exclusions. The latter seem to 
have been due to a cut+paste job from other build scripts where those 
exclusions were necessary to prevent circular module dependencies. Not a 
problem here.
