So, the deprecation was added late in 0.94 cycle... IMO, deprecation should be
for a full major release cycle, not part. Given that, is this committed patch
OK [~lhofhansl] and [~hshreedharan] ? It restores the old API so it is around
for 0.96 and can be removed in 0.98?
