[~nidmhbase] it would take some testing, like here where I'm making sure that
all the tests pass. Then make sure it won't affect performance or introduce new
bugs for those who don't use replication. Hopefully while doing this for 0.96.0
we can cover most of 0.94 but the code has changed a lot.
You'd also have to convince/bribe [~lhofhansl].
