Yeah, totally understand this abstraction effort needs to be finished
everywhere (and also the fact that it's quite a bit of work, affecting many
places in the codebase). The piecemeal approach would provide for easier
review/feedbacks of patches to ensure they're in line with the goal (as
[~stack] and [~cos] noted), and for better work structuring and parallelization.
