In my own tests I have seen performance drop from ~ 100K to 75K ops with 
compression on. This is with a custom LZ4 codec and YMMV. I think 20-25% 
penalty is not that big  to justify uncompressed mode of operation. In many 
cases, having more data in a cache is much more important than peak 
performance.
