So, after having the error every time I restarted the cluster (because it tried 
to replay the edits), I've manually build hbase with the change I proposed 
above (changing diffIdx from short to int). After restarting the region server, 
the region was sucessfully flushed. So the fix does solve the problem. I'll 
keep benchmarking my cluster and see if this error continues to happen.
