Skimmed the branch-1 patch, probably is okay for branch-1.1 and branch-1.0
assuming it applies cleanly. My concern is if the new class changes any
semantics (like, exceptions). I'll be kicking branch-1.1 for API
incompatibilities anyway, so I can check this one while I'm at it.
