Tests passed tho I had to patch HBase/IntegrationTestingUtilitily to get the
tests to run properly, there was a regression in an api that used to work in
distributed mode and now it doesn't. Will deal with that issue in a separate
jira.
Reconciled some changes with internal implementation, rebased.
[~apurtell] the patch should be good to commit. will need to create an addendum
for trunk patch.
