Given the extent of changes thus far, would it be easier or a better use of
time to refactor the wal recovery path so that it no longer presumed files?
That way we could have a "wal replay" interface that the replication code could
rely on and avoid these problems. (Presumably read replicas could similarly use
this instead of the DLR stuff it does now?)
