This seems to fix the TestAtomicOperation... HBASE-12751 makes this stuff work
different. Let me run some comparisons. Our 'fast path' may not be so 'fast
path' with this forward ported patch.
The checkstyle I can't/won't fix. It is complaint that the append method is 186
lines long when limit is 150; its fixed in the master version of the patch.
