As this is an existing bug in trunk, am ok committing this one first and then
followed by 17081's new patch. Added some comments/Qs on RB. Pls keep the
patch short enough to fix the bug as is today's state.. Let all other things be
handled in other issue(s). This is a critical bug fix so lets target this.
