Anoop Sam John commented on HBASE-20281:
----------------------------------------

The config related to combined mode is still valid for 1.x. That is why kept it
under pre 2.0 version.
Heap mode is removed as it is not really useful. We save nothing there. It
makes the xmx need still very high. So instead of BC one can use LRU cache ic
xmx is not an issue. I came across a study report comparing off heap and on
heap BC. (File mode also) will post that link also here.

> the first pass version of the upgrade docs has a brief note about the bucket
> cache changing:
> {quote}
> * hbase.bucketcache.combinedcache.enabled <!-- This seems worth a call out
> section? -->
> * hbase.bucketcache.ioengine no longer supports the 'heap' value. <!-- This
> seems worth a call out section? -->
> {quote}
> But the changes are substantial and warrant a section of their own under the
> "Changes of Note!" banner.
