Lars Hofhansl commented on HBASE-4608:
--------------------------------------

Just my $0.02 here... I think having a compression type + compression version
will be hard to grok for newcomers unfamiliar with this area, whereas having a
single compression type fields is clear. A new version of a compression
algorithm is a new type (IMHO). We do not have compression versions for the
HFiles, just compression types.

I think with WAL_VERSION and compression type we have enough flexibility
(HLogKey version is really unrelated as it is for other serialization as well).

What do you think Ted?

I'll do some testing as to what the compression ratio is for a few of our
scenarios tomorrow.

> The current bottleneck to HBase write speed is replicating the WAL appends
> across different datanodes. We can speed up this process by compressing the
> HLog. Current plan involves using a dictionary to compress table name, region
> id, cf name, and possibly other bits of repeated data. Also, HLog format may
> be changed in other ways to produce a smaller HLog.
