@bharathv @apurtell @wchevreuil I believe @bharathv suggestion to have a metric at source level instead makes sense to me. That metric will eventually catch the situation of peer connection failure as well. I have raised a PR for `master` branch [here](https://github.com/apache/hbase/pull/3018/files). Can you please review it?
