Yes Tez master is using protobuf 3.x but that has not been part of 0.10.2 Tez
release. If you see 0.10.2 Tez pom.xml,

it shows. Hadoop 3.3.4 is using 3.x proto during native compilation. But when
you integrate Tez with Hadoop 3.3.4 it install 2.5.0 protobuf if you check
these 2 tickets [TEZ-4300] Download protoc automatically compile/development
time - ASF JIRA (apache.org) and [TEZ-4428] Use protoc-jar-maven-plugin to
generate protobuf classes - ASF JIRA (apache.org). This is why I think this
upgrade will break things. Let me know your thoughts
