Changes of this magnitude (introducing a new api or interface that will be maintained indefinitely) need to have some wide community support. As I mentioned the API module is a pretty high level of scrutiny because the burden is beyond just the implementer. API changes impact all future implementers and folks writing compatibility layers. So if we can't rally multiple folks to support adding the API, then it probably shouldn't be added.
