   @stevenzwu, option 1 doesn't require additional work in `wrap`. The 
additional work only needs to occur in `fieldStats()` to find the set of field 
IDs and in `type()` to build the type. But neither of those should be accessed 
in the write path when stats are wrapped this way so it should be fine. I 
explained this in a comment here:
