Peter Rozsa created IMPALA-15499:
------------------------------------

             Summary: Support CREATE TABLE on Iceberg REST catalogs
                 Key: IMPALA-15499
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/IMPALA-15499
             Project: IMPALA
          Issue Type: Sub-task
            Reporter: Peter Rozsa

h3. Problem

CREATE TABLE in a REST catalog database fails at catalog-op-executor.cc:111-113
in
standalone mode and goes to catalogd in hybrid mode. Even with a transport, the
catalogd path is HMS-bound:
 * (a) Location: CatalogOpExecutor.java:4322-4324 uses
MetastoreShim.getPathForNewTable(hiveDatabase, msTbl), but
IcebergMetaProvider.loadDb
(:154-159) returns a Database with only the name set (no location, no
parameters).
 * (b) Existence check: :4303-4306 uses hiveClient.tableExists.
 * (c) Analysis: CreateTableStmt.java:775-807 throws "Unknown Iceberg catalog
type: %s"
for anything outside the 4 TIcebergCatalog values; :670-674 silently defaults a
missing
'iceberg.catalog' to HIVE_CATALOG.
 * (d) Owner: IcebergCatalogOpExecutor.createTable (:105, :113-116) injects
HiveCatalog.HMS_TABLE_OWNER.
 * (e) HMS-only steps: populateExternalTableCols (:126-134, called at
CatalogOpExecutor.java:4361) and addCatalogVersionToTxn (:781-789).
