Do you have any concerns about the legal viability of memkind within other 
Apache projects? It seems that by virtue of these LGPL transitive dependencies, 
ASF projects will be unable to distribute their dependency graph in whole. That 
is, it'll be legal to distribute memkind itself but not its transitive 
dependencies, which will harm the user experience (i.e. if the transitive 
dependencies aren't found on the host, the application won't start). libnuma 
seems like it's fairly common; do you know whether it's part of the base OS 
images shipped by popular Linux vendors?

AFAICT the only legal way for ASF projects to distribute the LGPL transitive 
dependencies is if they're declared as "optional". Meaning, the project's 
distribution would not include them (and thus memkind) by default; users would 
have to "opt-in" to receive them. It's added complexity for the project and 
also not a great user experience. There's some discussion about this in the 
linked ticket LEGAL-487 if you're curious.

Separately, do you know why Linux vendors haven't been updating memkind? CentOS 
6, 7, and Ubuntu 18 are all still shipping memkind 1.1.0 which was released in 
2016.
