You're right - I didn't touch source packaging. Splitting the top-level build 
won't be as easy as with ant. It can be done in many different ways but it's 
definitely a larger issue and I would exclude it from this one...

I'm really hesitant to say it given the emotions it always entails, but the 
absolute best way would be to split Lucene as an entirely independent project 
(with its own gradle build) and then have Solr declare a git submodule "lucene" 
and its own gradle build that would include Lucene's. This would allow Solr 
devs to work on head-of-development Lucene and at the same time allow both 
project builds to be smaller and more focused....
