P.S.: Around that time there was also a cleanup of code in MMAPDir, which looks strange (at least the backport to 9.x): https://github.com/apache/lucene/pull/15033 (this caused also strange errors during backporting). The unused variable had a reason. It looks fine, but this could also cause issues with that code.
