Your proposed design sounds good. One think I would caution against is including too many co-located buttons and/or swapping/removing buttons under certain conditions. I don't think you're suggesting we do this, but without seeing something I only want to mention it to avoid a potentially confusing experience. Look forward to seeing this in action and providing some design critique.
