Bug ID: 122975
Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: "Apply Style" box just shows base style, not other
attributes
Product: Writer
Version: 4.0.0
Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P3
Component: formatting
Assignee: [email protected]

If you create a new document in Writer and type some text, the text is in the
"Default" style. If you then bold some of the text, the "Apply Style" toolbar
box still says "Default" style. In M$ Write, the corresponding box will say
"Default + bold". I find this very useful - particularly in cases when you are
working on an OCR or other document that may have subtle formatting differences
that might not be especially noticeable to causal proofing. It is handy to
just click on the text, putting your cursor there, and know any changes from a
given style.
It is conceivable that some people may not want this (but who would not want to
be alerted to differences from a style?). Thus, it might be an option, or a
different toolbar widget. I do not think it is a good idea to be able to
select text and have to choose something in order to see subtle differences in
formatting. I'd like to see a more extended description of its style +
formatting just by clicking the cursor; for when you have a document that
requires extensive work of this kind. I am aware that the M$ box sometimes has
much longer text than it display. Perhaps a toolbar widget with a
user-specified width could better M$; or else dock that could be resized.
This is a feature that is been in M$ Office since 2004, if not sooner; that
never made it into OO before Apache. Here's hoping someone gets around to
addressing this long overdue oversight.
