--- Comment #16 from [email protected] --- Opensymbol was, from what I could tell, properly installed but it was an old version (V1.10 from Sun, 2005). It looked the same in other applications. I now replaced it with a newer version, 2.4.3 from Oracle 2010. I am not sure whether this is the newest, but this is the newest I could find. There part of the problem is gone (the capital Greek letters now look reasonable and are no longer Sans-Serif) but the formatting shows all the problems that I had since I run it on Windows 8 (square-roots off, cdots shifted to the left, the divides-bar is much too short...). I attach a screen-shot of that. Interestingly, I got the best results when I completely uninstalled the open symbol font. There the Sans-Serif capital letters are back, but everything else looks fairly reasonable. I attach a screen shot of that as well.
