If there is no JRE selected on Tools - Options - OpenOffice - Java, then the
application may not allow you to add the MySQL Connector J.

Is there a JRE selected?
Note that OpenOffice is a 32 bit application on Windows, it needs a 32 bit JRE.

And by the way, did you try the Native connector? (no Java needed), see
