Example .docx that crashes Open Office
A friend has been creating files in Microsoft Office and sending them to me. I
cannot open the files with OpenOffice 3.4.1. Instead OpenOffice crashes with
the message "Due to an unexpected error, OpenOffice.org crashed. All the files
you were working on will now be saved. The next time OpenOffice.org is
launched, your files will be recovered automatically."
This has been testing on Windows 7 operating system Service Pack 1.
The crash occurs when opening the file from Windows Explorer or through the
File->Open option of OpenOffice. When attempting to open the file from Windows
Explorer with no other OpenOffice documents open, the crash leaves the
OpenOffice application in an inconsistent state, and OpenOffice cannot be used
again until the system is restarted -- or perhaps it is sufficient for the user
to log out and log back in.
The specific version of OpenOffice as reported by the help menu is
A00341m1(Build:9593) - Rev. 1372282
It is difficult to determine whether this issue may be a duplicate of existing
issues with DOCX files that crash OpenOffice. I have not researched what
unusual characteristics the file may have that are causing the crash, but the
file does not appear to contain a table.
I have attached one file that causes the crash. I have another file from the
same author that causes the crash, but there appears to be a limit of one
attachment, so I have attached only one of the files. The DOCX file can be
previewed by Yahoo mail viewer and can be opened by Google docs.
