[~sodonnell] There is one major downside with having the compression at chunk 
level - If encryption is enabled, then each chunk will contain encrypted bytes, 
thus compression makes little sense in that case.

Also, if compression is implemented according to the attached document, the 
data is compressed before getting into {{KeyOutputStream}} (or 
{{ECKeyOutputStream}} if EC is enabled}}) and decompressed after being read 
from it. So technically compression and replication type are independent and 
compression will work for both EC and non-EC modes.
