My main concern right now is the performance. It's not clear why this would be
so slow. Virtually all the time is spent in batchMutate in the region server. I
have no idea why, yet.
The sampler indicates syncOrDefer, the profiler indicates the skip list.

As is, it's not useful for our applications. I'll continue to look at this.
If anybody has ideas, I'd much appreciate any pointers.
