Ben Hutcheson commented on PLC4X-190:
-------------------------------------

>From what I understand about information models, they basically define the
>tags and methods that should be available for a particular type of device.

>From a PLC4X standpoint, the information models sit at a higher level.

However, Integrating information models into the OPC-UA server might be a good
fit, if there was an intermediate layer where we could map/redefine PLC tags to
match an information model. Something like this would really come in handy
where you can take legacy code in the PLC and remap it in the OPC-UA server so
that they can be discovered as certain devices. It 'should' (Although I'm not
aware of any SCADA systems that support it) make SCADA configuration easier as
the devices could be discovered instead of configured.

> As the major plc providers are starting to support OPC-UA they also started
> to standardized the data structures in it with
> [https://opcfoundation.org/markets-collaboration/umati/]
> UMATI. As PLC4X aims to connect all kinds of PLCs to one layer a connector or
> mapper from PLC to UMATI (OPC-UA) based format enhances our approach and
> enables all kinds of PLCs to map to UMATI as easily as possible.
