Review Comment:
   Actually, both `send()` variants are "asynchronous" according to Kafka 
javadoc. The difference is that we either wait for the result or not. 
   
   Could we refactor the code to have only one place where we call `send`, but 
later we optionally call `.get()` on the future if the "sync" configuration 
flag is set. WDYT?
