Briefly, the "hole" or "shell" determiniation comes from the position within the WKB (shell, then holes), and in theory it signed area of each ring is calculated (and it's reoriented in place such that shells have positive areas and holes have negative areas). That logic fails for "invalid" polygons, but it would be an s2geography issue (or an issue with the polygon in question). -- This is an automated message from the Apache Git Service.
