Ok after realizing it was a gpg issue, I killed the gpg-agent. "gpg" failed to
work, so I tried "gpg2" which succeeded. After that "gpg" started working
(presumably because the agent was started when I ran "gpg2").
Anyways the task works for me now!
Unfortunately I couldn't debug the last 4 steps you listed, because I'm not
sure how to reproduce what was wrong with my system...
