Note that the above comment really just describes "general system property
passing to gradle" -- it's not specifically related to this issue. But I
figured it was still probably good to record explicitly somewhere in connection
with this issue, since it's not terribly common to need to pass system
properties to gradle, and in this case it's a prerequisite.
