This ticket has been tentatively attached to SOLR-15734, indicating that it
should probably be done before the v1 API can be deprecated. Some explanation
of 'why' seems necessary. This ticket (and its children) aren't strictly
required for bringing v2 up to parity with v1. Instead, this ticket is
important as a prerequisite for a number of others that do contribute to v1
parity: particularly SOLR-15736 and SOLR-15735.
