[~noble.paul], can you please share your understanding of why this slowdown is
there, and how is this commit supposed to fix it? I haven't done a thorough job
of it, but running performance test on this once, casually, shows me no
significant improvement. If you can setup a branch cut from branch_9x with your
fix, I can setup the automated tests with graphs.
