I opened an alternative PR:
[apache/solr#1481|https://github.com/apache/solr/pull/1481].
Ultimately my inclination would be to remove {{async=false}} as a config
option; but if we're leaving it, the above PR should fix the test failures (and
fix behavior for users as well).
