Are you asking about spark-ec2 specifically? this generally is not supported by
the project. Yes, you really do have to stop the cluster if you want to run a
different version. Of course it's then a matter of updating files and such, but
that's already documented. I don't see what data in HDFS has to do with it.
Again, this is better as a question on the mailing list though.
