Thanks @GGraziadei and @rzo1. ecdfe2fb1 adds the tracer change from my last comment to this PR, and docs/Tracing.md now describes its two effects on traces. The storm-client fast path would go in the follow-up @GGraziadei suggested, measured on its own.
