The formula is typed with MathType, embedded into the document as an OLE
object.

(The following actions were done with Chinese Simplified locale)

I downloaded MathType from its official site, and installed it. When I double
click the formula embedded in the document, MathType opens up a window in which
the formula is rendered correctly. When I close the window, the formula shown
in the OOo writer becomes messy in fonts.

I installed a Chinese version of Windows, and installed OpenOffice under the
Windows with locale un-touched.

By the way, I also tried on OpenSUSE, the same problem exists. (With
LC_TYPE=zh_CN.UTF-8)
