Yeah, on a large cache, it can take days.

I started working on a plugin allowing for "tagged" (or generation IDs) on 
content. It's only intended for purging, but that's generally what you'd use 
the regex traversal for anyways. This plugin (and optimizations to the core) 
would make it O(1) to purge any particularly tagged set of content. I will work 
on this more after v3.2 is released.
