NEWS RELEASE
House Approves Ehlers Bill To Strengthen Math-Science Education

WASHINGTON, Jul. 30‹ The House of Representatives today unanimously approved
H.R. 100, the National Science Education Act. The legislation was introduced
by Vernon J. Ehlers (R-Grand Rapids), Chairman of the House Science
Subcommittee on Environment, Technology, and Standards.

³This bill will help teachers become better prepared and more knowledgable
in the classroom,² said Ehlers. ³Providing master teachers with the
necessary resources to train other teachers is exactly the type of support
our teachers deserve and must receive.²

H.R. 100 requires the National Science Foundation (NSF) to establish various
programs relating to science, mathematics, engineering, and technology
education. The bill also directs the NSF Director to award competitive
grants to institutions of higher education to: (1) train master teachers to
improve the teaching of mathematics and science from kindergarten through
ninth grade in various ways, including mentoring other teachers; and (2)
assist elementary and secondary schools to design and implement master
teacher programs.

Ehlers has held numerous hearings over the past three years to develop ideas
and solutions for improving math and science education in K-12 classrooms.
In addition to H.R. 100 he has also introduced H.R. 101, the National
Science Education Enhancement Act and H.R. 102, the National Science
Education Incentive Act.

H.R. 100 now goes to the Senate for consideration.
