I agree that a working maxage is the major missing feature in mbsync.
Without it, large folders are unusable.
Right now, MaxMessages works after the second sync. So it will download all
your messages, and then discard some. This might be a temporary workaround.
I haven't tested it extensively. I used it to prune my local folder after
the first sync, and then disabled it to avoid the burden of deleting some
local messages on every sync. Something like MaxMessages working during the
first sync would be a huge step forward.
