If some of the printers are complaining I assume that some of them don't. Many printers won't touch a pdf if any image or color is not cmyk. Some won't accept true-type fonts (stone age rips). If you need to work with the complaining printers, they will have to tell you what they accept, otherwise it's impossible to guess. There are tools (not server side) that can convert pdfs to any colorspace and even do the separations. Enfocus is a good place to start.
