The example I showed, and products like ActivePDF's
PDFPrint require Adobe Reader on the client, which is
very difficult to secure.

Another company that has an excellent thin-client
printing solution, and has print clients for DOS,
Windoze and Linux, among others, is ThinPrint.

Their solution, in simple terms, "prints" the PDF (or
any other file) to a file on the server side, in the
format suited to the client's printer. The client
application is simply a conduit, downloading the file
and sending it directly to the printer, with no print
drivers required.

The clients are free, but the server is likely quite
pricey. It's a very widely used solution in the
thin-client market, but may be a good fit for your
requirements.

A simplified in-house version wouldn't be difficult to
produce, IF your clients are using a limited range of
printers. If you need to support a wide range of
printers, ThinPrint may be the way to go.
