I have lots of paragraphs, and I have no idea beforehand how big they will get, or how small, so defining x and y-positions beforehand (like you have to do when working with ColumnText) won't help me very much. Some paragraphs willl contain tables, some not, and some depend on the data of the input-file. I have just one "Column", if you can call this a column at all.
Trouble is also, that if you start the ColumnText somewhere in the document, you have no idea where the actual y-coordinate is at the moment.
Somehow I rather would like to have a working setKeepTogether-Functionality, that must have been working sometimes before, else the method wouldn't be there I guess. At least the effect of the "vanishing table" is very strange. Don't you think that this is rather a bug?
All the best

Use ColumnText to avoid widows/orphans.

Do not add PdfPTable objects to Paragraph objects.
These setKeepTogether methods are old.
Use the ColumnText mechanisms to define your layout.
