Elementary, my dear Watson! PdfWriter.getVerticalPosition gives you the current Y position. As long as you don't add the Chapter, the writer doesn't know anything about it. > You know: I have one big Chapter adding Sections to it (to get > numbering). Likewise I will keep telling you that section 14.2 in the book explains how to retrieve the Y position where every chapter/section begins/ends.
