Note that this could also be caused by hardware: RAM might be flakey, HDs can create some havoc, too. Note that a core dump is usually created on SIGBUS if not disabled in the executing user's limits. But since you most probably will not have debugging symbols for the JVM, I wouldn't bother debugging the coredump either. My suggestion would be to make sure that backups work and hold your feet for the moment...
