Your code looks fine. Have you tested it with other PDFs
(not only with your scanned PDFs).  This is a strange problem.
I haven't heard about it before. It's as if the rendering mode
is wrong. Could you put one of those PDFs online somewhere for
us to inspect? Maybe the problem is caused by something that
is already present in the first page.
